SDG 7 : Affordable & Clean Energy
Don Bosco Green Alliance
November 05, 2018
The world’s leaders have promised to end poverty, reduce inequalities, & tackle climate change by 2030 as part of their agenda & the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One of the Priority Areas that the Don Bosco Green Alliance is focussing on is SDG 7 – Affordable & Clean energy.
Let us have a look at what is this goal all about.
Before we get a brief at what exactly is the SDG 7 all about, have a look at some of the facts that would underscore the need to implement the SDG 7 on priority:
– 3 billion people rely on wood, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and heating
– In the developing world, 1/5 people do not have access to modern energy.
– 3.8 million premature deaths occur due to air pollution caused by indoor cooking & breathing toxic fumes.
– 836 million people in India do not have electricity at all!
Shocking right?
The next time you leave your room with the lights on, think twice about how lucky you are to even have lights in your room, make sure you switch them off!
But why do developing countries not have access to modern electricity? Because some of the countries are so poor that they cannot afford to have large-scale infrastructures to provide with electricity. Due to this, a majority of people often burn kerosene lamps in their homes & use wood for cooking indoors. Which in turn is as harmful as smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day! Women largely are affected by air pollution in their homes by inhaling toxic fumes from the firewood burned & children are affected by the toxic
fumes emitted by the kerosene lamps!
But every story has a superhero! In this case, it’s the SDG 7! The sustainable development goal 7, aims to provide affordable & clean energy to all! Because today, lack of access to energy supplies and transformation systems is a constraint to human and economic development! It is only recently that humans have witnessed the power of nature! Nature provides
us with a series of renewable energy sources like solar, wind & hydro energy which can be reused over and over without depleting!
Watch the video below to get a short brief on what exactly is
the SDG 7 & how do we achieve that:
The more we burn fossil fuels, the more greenhouse gases we add to the environment which result in climate change & depleting of the Earth’s natural resources. But the SDG 7 could only be implemented if there is a major change in policies & laws formed by the governments globally. Governments need to improve energy efficiency and increase the use of renewables in their countries and cities. There has to be a collective effort put in to ensure a safe & healthy lifestyle for each & every human on
the planet!
Achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) i.e. ensuring a universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, will open a new world of opportunity for billions of people. It will help eradicate poverty, tackle climate action and have a sustainable world! If developed countries provide the underdeveloped or developing countries with technological support & modern means of communication, a majority of the world’s problems could be solved without resorting to conflict.
Energy efficiency and increased use of renewables will contribute to climate change mitigation and reduce the risk of disasters.
