Mushroom Cultivation Workshop at Don Bosco College: A Step Towards Sustainability

Don Bosco Cares for Our Common Home (DBCCH) Centre’s initiative, Don Bosco College (Co-Ed), Yelagiri Hills, India recently conducted a workshop on Mushroom Cultivation. This hands-on workshop aimed to equip students with practical knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices and encourage them to take active steps toward environmental stewardship.

The workshop, which was organized by DBCCH, offered an excellent opportunity for students to learn the entire process of mushroom cultivation, from preparing the substrate to harvesting. Experts from the DBCCH team led the session, demonstrating how mushroom cultivation can be a simple yet effective way to promote food security and environmental sustainability.

 Highlights of the Workshop:

●     Students learned about the types of mushrooms suitable for cultivation in the Yelagiri region.

●     The process of preparing the substrate, inoculation, and maintaining optimal growing conditions for mushrooms was explained in detail.

●     Hands-on training was provided, where students actively participated in creating cultivation setups using straw, water, and mushroom spores.

●     The workshop emphasized the importance of hygiene and sterilization to ensure a successful harvest.

●     Students also gained insights into the benefits of mushroom cultivation, such as its nutritional value, economic potential, and its role in reducing food waste.

The students were enthusiastic and engaged throughout the workshop, showing great interest in learning about this eco-friendly practice. Many students expressed their desire to implement what they learned at home, turning this knowledge into practical action that aligns with the college's commitment to sustainability and care for the environment.

A Path Forward: This initiative, under the guidance of DBCCH, is part of the broader objective of promoting sustainable living practices among the students of Don Bosco College. Mushroom cultivation, as an easily replicable project, offers students the opportunity to develop skills in organic farming and entrepreneurship, thereby contributing to the well-being of their communities.

Through such workshops, Don Bosco College continues to empower students to be agents of change, fostering a deeper connection with nature and promoting the values of environmental stewardship.
