Earth Day Celebration- Don Bosco Fambul, Sierra Leone
On April 22nd every year, World Earth Day is celebrated across the globe to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Organizations, institutions, groups, and individuals, embark on a wide range of activities as a show of commitment to protecting the environment. This day is set aside to create awareness and to sensitise the entire population worldwide that the Earth is the home of a man and there is a need to protect it from degrading or losing its form hence the adage ‘’If you protect your environment, your environment will protect you.’’
In a world where climate change continues to be an increasingly pressing issue, collective actions towards attaining a more sustainable environment that is resilient are key.
In a bid to actualize the theme in this year’s celebration, Don Bosco Fambul Eco-Project, Salone Green Alliance, embarked on an awareness raising march-past across the cities of Port Loko, Makeni, Bo and Kenema, in Sierra Leone. During this exercise, participants used placards, posters, and jingle advertisements to reiterate the impact of plastic pollution and deforestation, and the need to protect our planet.
This year’s event brought together thousands of school pupils, school teachers, and major stakeholders. Statements were made by senior Government officials as a show of the Government’s commitment to fighting climate change
The celebration was also climaxed by media engagements in different facets in prints, newsletters, and one-on-one, media engagements/interviews which catapulted the occasion to the highest peak.
