Students Champion Environmental Awareness Through Debate

An inter-class debate on the theme “Climate Change – A Global Warning” was conducted at Don Bosco Junior College, Naigaon East on February 25, 2026, offering students a platform to critically engage with one of the most pressing global concerns. The theme resonated with the repeated affirmation of Pope Leo XIV that climate change is not merely a scientific or political issue, but a moral and spiritual responsibility.

The programme commenced with a thought-provoking introduction that presented compelling evidence of climate change and underscored the urgent need for awareness and action. The debate featured two teams of three members each: the Proposition team from Grade VII, which highlighted the far-reaching dangers of climate change, and the Opposition team from Grade VIII, which argued that climate variations are natural and historically unavoidable.

Students underwent structured training under the guidance of Coordinating Supervisor Tr. Dorothy Fernandes, supported by teachers Archana, Vinodini, Sneha, and Olinda, with moderation by Mrs Gracian Desouza. These preparatory sessions sharpened students’ analytical thinking, strengthened argument construction, and fostered collaboration and confident public speaking — skills essential for participation in competitive debating forums.

The debate was assessed by an esteemed panel of judges — Dr Rekha Maske, Dental Surgeon, along with Mrs Claudia Machado and Ms Evita Almeida, Science lecturers from the college section — whose feedback encouraged evidence-based reasoning and ethical reflection on environmental stewardship.

Addressing the gathering, Principal Fr Anthony Fonseca emphasised that such initiatives cultivate responsible decision-making and moral awareness among students.

The debate left a meaningful impact on students by nurturing environmental sensitivity, encouraging respectful exchange of diverse viewpoints, and inspiring many to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. It exemplified the holistic educational approach of Don Bosco institutions, where learning extends beyond textbooks to shape socially responsible and value-driven individuals. The initiative fostered intellectual growth, ethical consciousness, and active citizenship, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to forming young leaders prepared to address global issues with compassion and conviction.
