(ANS – Rome) – The Salesian Congregation has taken a bold step toward championing ecological education and sustainability by appointing Fr. Savio Silveira, SDB, as the Coordinator for Integral Ecology in the Salesian Youth Ministry Sector for the term 2025–2031. This move underscores the Congregation’s commitment to realizing the vision of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ and forming young people as stewards of the planet.
After completing a successful six-year tenure as Provincial of the Mumbai Province, Fr. Savio brings a wealth of experience in education, pastoral ministry, and social engagement to his new role. His sensitivity to environmental concerns and his dedication to sustainable development have long been hallmarks of his Salesian vocation.
As the Coordinator of the Don Bosco Green Alliance, a global network comprising over 600 Salesian institutions across 90 countries, Fr. Savio has spearheaded efforts to promote environmental protection and youth involvement in ecological causes. His leadership has inspired countless young people to embrace eco-conscious living while addressing global ecological challenges.
In his new position, Fr. Savio will guide the Salesian Youth Ministry in integrating ecological concerns into its pastoral and educational mission. He envisions ecological engagement as a core dimension of Salesian youth ministry, emphasizing that “caring for our common home” must be woven into the fabric of all Salesian institutions, from schools and colleges to oratories, parishes, and youth centers.
A Vision Rooted in Laudato Si’ and Salesian Values
Fr. Savio draws inspiration from the Salesian General Chapter 29 (GC29), which highlights integral ecology as a privileged field of educational and pastoral work. He underscores the importance of ecological education for young people, stating, “Ecological engagement is not an optional project; it is a core dimension of Salesian youth ministry.”
Reflecting on the role of youth in addressing ecological challenges, Fr. Savio emphasizes the need for young people to take the lead. He envisions Salesian institutions as platforms where youth can:
Identify critical local ecological concerns.
Analyze root causes and design solutions.
Implement concrete action plans.
Participate in global environmental movements, fostering collaboration and shared responsibility.
“Today’s young people are deeply concerned about ecological issues and want to contribute meaningfully to change,” he shared. “It is our responsibility as Salesians to support and empower them to lead these efforts locally and globally.” Fr. Savio further elaborates on the importance of dreaming big and striving for collective action. He states, “We need to dream with a vision and fight for that vision. Together with young people, we can build a future that is sustainable, equitable, and filled with hope.” This vision reflects the Salesian mission to inspire young minds while addressing urgent ecological concerns.
Experience and Hope from the Don Bosco Green Alliance
Fr. Savio’s tenure with the Don Bosco Green Alliance has shaped his approach to this new role. He has witnessed the passion of young people and the commitment of Salesian provinces worldwide to address the ecological crisis. Under his leadership, the Alliance has grown into a vibrant global movement, inspiring innovative initiatives across continents.
This experience fills him with hope. “I am confident that Salesian youth ministry in the years ahead will take decisive steps in responding to ‘the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor’ (Laudato Si’, 13),” he said.
A Shared Mission for the Future
BOSCOM South Asia has expressed its gratitude to Fr. Savio for his dedicated service as the In-charge of Social Communication. His new appointment reinforces the Congregation’s commitment to Laudato Si’, ensuring that ecological education becomes a cornerstone of its mission to the young.
As Fr. Savio embarks on this vital role, his leadership promises to inspire a global Salesian movement that not only educates but also empowers young people to take action for the planet. His journey is a testament to the Congregation’s resolve to carry forward Don Bosco’s dream of transforming young lives while safeguarding creation.
